Favourite and least favourite math teachers

En repensant à mes expériences d'apprentissage en mathématiques, un professeur se distingue particulièrement : M. Abdelmajid, qui m'a enseigné en 7ème année secondaire dans mon pays d'origine (équivalant au 12eme année au Canada). Ce professeur est resté gravé dans ma mémoire pendant près de 20 ans, surtout en raison de ses qualités exceptionnelles en tant qu'enseignant. M. Abdelmajid avait une passion contagieuse pour les mathématiques qui se manifestait dans chaque leçon. Sa capacité à rendre les concepts complexes accessibles et compréhensibles était remarquable. Il abordait les problèmes de manière engageante, ce qui stimulait notre intérêt et notre curiosité. De plus, il offrait un soutien constant et était toujours disponible pour aider ceux qui avaient des questions ou des difficultés, nous encourageant à améliorer nos compétences même en dehors de la salle de classe.

À l'inverse, je n'ai pas de souvenirs spécifiques de professeurs de mathématiques que je n'aurais pas appréciés, peut-être parce que ma passion pour les mathématiques a toujours prévalu. Cependant, en réfléchissant à ce que j'ai appris de M. Abdelmajid, je comprends l'importance de transmettre une passion authentique pour la matière et d'adopter une approche pédagogique qui rend l'apprentissage à la fois accessible et stimulant. En tant que nouvel enseignant, ces qualités seront essentielles pour créer un environnement d'apprentissage positif et motivant. Assurer une communication ouverte et offrir un soutien constant sont des aspects cruciaux qui peuvent faire une différence significative dans l'expérience d'apprentissage des élèves.

Looking back on my experiences learning mathematics, one teacher in particular stands out: Mr. Abdelmajid, who taught me in the 7th grade of secondary school in my home country (equivalent to grade 12 in Canada). This teacher has remained etched in my memory for almost 20 years, mainly because of his exceptional qualities as a teacher. Mr. Abdelmajid had an infectious passion for mathematics that was evident in every lesson. His ability to make complex concepts accessible and understandable was remarkable. He approached problems in an engaging manner, which stimulated our interest and curiosity. In addition, he offered constant support and was always available to help those who had questions or difficulties, encouraging us to improve our skills even outside the classroom. Conversely, I do not have any specific memories of mathematics teachers that I would not have appreciated, perhaps because my passion for mathematics has always prevailed. However, reflecting on what I have learned from Mr. Abdelmajid, I understand the importance of conveying a genuine passion for the subject and adopting a teaching approach that makes learning both accessible and stimulating. As a new teacher, these qualities will be essential in creating a positive and motivating learning environment. Ensuring open communication and offering constant support are crucial aspects that can make a significant difference in the students’ learning experience.
